Invasive aquatic plants pose serious threats to ponds and water bodies. Water quality can become unsatisfactory, damage to the ponds ecosystems, block sunlight for good plants and limits recreational enjoyment. The reduction of oxygen and increased nitrates and phosphorous from the decomposing plants/weeds will eventual starve the pond of oxygen creating a bad pond ecosystem. Two (2) explanations of facts: Eutrophication is high concentrations of nutrients, especially phosphates and nitrates gathering in ponds or bodies of water creating excessive algae growth. When the algae dies and decompose, high levels of organic matter and decomposing organisms will deplete the water of available oxygen. This process can cause the death of other organisms and fish.
Anoxia (Anoxic Event) is a lack of oxygen caused by excessive nutrients in waterways which triggers algae growth. When the plants die and decay, oxygen is reduced from the water creating green/milky white water colour and a unpleasant rotten egg smell. The lack of oxygen in your pond is often deadly for invertebrates, fish and shellfish.
Randy's Pond Services will use special reciprocating cutters to cut the larger plants below the water level and remove to your compost area. We also use a special pond rake, The Ultimate Pond Rake manufactured and sold by Randy's Pond Services, attached to a long rope that is thrown into the pond to drag out the aquatic weeds. The unwanted weeds are piled on the shore to drain, dry and moved to your compost area. Invasive aquatic weeds should be cut, raked and removed every year to avoid further pond ecosystem damage.
